(More customer reviews)I've owned the Osborne EB-3 miter guide for three or four years now, and I consider it to be some of the best money I ever spent. The nice, heavy gauge that came with my current table saw is now something I only use when I'm making box joints ... in fact the box joint jig is pretty much permanently attached to it. Instead, I rely on the Osborne for my crosscutting needs.
You could make an extension for your miter gauge that would effectively back up your crosscuts, but you'll find the Osborne to be a lot more stable due to its triangular design. You can adjust it so that the right edge passes close to your blade at 90 degrees, but readjust, when you move to a different angle, or else the right corner will be in the path of the blade. Mine has a nice little slice in it now ... fortunately, it's aluminum, so the blade wasn't harmed.
There are positive stops for commonly used angles, which allows for repeatability, as does the flip-up stop on the extendable right edge. (Incidentally, I keep saying right and left, as if you'll be using the gauge in the left miter slot, but I'm pretty sure it can be set up for use on the other side as well.) The flip stop is particularly useful when you want to square up one end of a piece of wood and then trim the other end to length.
In sum, I'm very pleased with this tool, and I use it almost every time I'm in the shop. It's a big step up from the stock miter gauge, and it helps with accuracy and repeatability.
