I have been an electrical, and automation technician for over 23 years, with an associates degree in electrical engineering and a batchelors degree in automation engineering. With, experience repairing arcade videos, building, upgrading and repairing computer systems, repairing and programminf robotics, and designing, constructing, installing, and repairing control systems for the manufacturing industry.
And, I feel I have to bring my issues with this product to your attention
This arrived promptly as ordered and was packaged very well. That's where it ends. ExTech's box stated the same as Amazon's web site, however after opening the box and checking the contents something strange came to my attention.
The digital multimeter in this kit was not the same model that both web sites (Amazon's and Extech's) and the box itself and the enclosed manual stated was included in the kit.
Someone made a pretty good attempt to make the model 410 look like the model 430. The label that shows the switch position for each function didn't match the function I got. For starters the Off position did not turn the meter off. After closer inspection I noticed that the display did not match what the manual showed. I also noticed that the meter said 410 below the right side buttons and that the bottom button was not a range button, but a check button (with a battery symbol on it).
I looked up the model 410 on ExTech's web site. The buttons where as they should have been but the function switch labeling looked like the one for the model 430 instead and the overlay on the screen when I unpacked the meter made it seem as the display would look correct for the model 430. the actual screen did not look as the overlay suggested. However, it did match the screen which the model 410 should have.
I then started to check the function switch position and guess what. The layout of the model 410 matched the actual function on the unit I received perfectly.
All of this looks as if either ExTechs's quality control has gone south for the winter or some one has tried to purposely use the cheaper meter to pass as what was suppose to be in the kit.

I would have been OK with the mix up if there had been no attempt to make the meter appear as the other model. This is not only unethical but a safty hazzard as well. The poositioning of the function on the switch If I had not noticed they were wrong could have been fatal. Set a Meter to the voltage setting but it is actually on current and try to measure across a 480 Volt supply and tell me waht happens? The meter would probably melt even if it were actually on the fused current function besides blowing the fuse. But also create an arcing situation which could be fatal if the correct circumstances were to exist.
I also needed the capacitance function that was not on this substituted meter.
All of these facts are not neccessarily Amazons fault, because they only sold the product.
The other issue is that when I contacted Amazon to return the item for one that had the correct meter in it I was told that I could only receive a refund and not an exchange. Their reply for this was that it was my fault and not their's. I didn't want the refund I wanted what I ordered and I don't understand how receiving something that was not as advertised is my fault. I paid overnight shipping for this item and now I will have to pay shipping again to get one that is correct. Yet it is my fault that their web site started that the kit included the model 430 and I received the model 410 that was doctored up to appear as if it were the model 430.
I have purchased a lot of stuff from Amazon and This whole situation is making have second thoughts about purchasing from them again and If they would make good on their sale instead of making pay double shipping for this item my rating wouln't be as low as it is.
It is a good deal even if it was suppose to have the model 410, but the attempt make someone believe that an inferior product was something else is inexcuseable, deceptive, and just down right unethical.
If someone had received this that didn't know enough about electricity the results could be dissasterous.
