(More customer reviews)First of all, the photo for this item is not actually of the product. I searched but could not find much product information about the Lufkin MW18 wheel. After a significant price drop, I decided to take a chance and buy one. Receiving it, I found that the while the MW18 wheel is not as large or as heavy duty, as the item pictured appears to be, it is not a cheap piece of junk either.
The wheel is very light and compact, measuring just 17 inches long fully retracted. When the three section handle is fully extended, the wheel measures about 38 inches. The five digit mechanically operated display, can measure up to 9999 feet, with a fifth white colored display for inches (1 through 11). The reset button is next to the display. The wheel itself is only 3.8" inches in diameter, made of plastic, with a layer of rubber tread. The rolling action of the wheel on a flat smooth surface, is very smooth and even. When you roll the wheel forward, the display counts forward, and when you roll it back and the display counts backward.
If you plan to measure smooth, level surfaces, this tool will do a reasonably accurate job. However if you use it on rough or uneven surfaces, accuracy will suffer. Because the wheel is so small, it will tend to get stuck on even minor physical obstructions, like rocks, tree roots, clumps of grass, or changes in grade, like curbs, sidewalks or pavement. You just need to be aware of this, and go easy in these situations. If you run into something and try to force the wheel over, that is the when it is most likely that something could break. With a fully extend length of 38 inches, those that are taller, may need to lean down a bit to use this.
It may look like a toy, but this compact tool is quite sturdy, and should do the job, if all you need are approximate measurements of property, landmarks, or site conditions. The display is easy to read and reset, and conveniently provides readings to the closest inch. This is not a heavy duty wheel suitable for use by engineers or surveyors, but I have seen it used at traffic accident sites by police officers. If Amazon would display a photo of actual item, it would help avoid confusion. On sale for $10 it was a four star buy, but at the regular price of $35, you might want to look for something that is larger and sturdier if you have other than casual use in mind.
