The only trouble I have had is when measuring duct, and that's due to it's reflectiveness. In those instances I can usually find a spot with a label, or seam that can be measured. I'd hate to go back to exclusively using a tape.

The markings are both sides of the tape are a cool feature, but more than that it's just a solid, sturdy, well made tape measurer. I have a few other tape measurers, but this is the one I always use. The tape is thick so it doesn't bend or fold easily when measuring long distances, it retracts like a mother, and the quick lock works well. If you're measuring things above your head, it's especially helpful, but even if you need to solid tape measurer that will last, pick one up.

Industrial 24" Digital Caliper - Stainless Steel - Large LCD Readout - Instant SAE/MM Conversion Review

(More customer reviews)I've ordered two of these 40" calipers now -- I returned the first, and I should probably return the second. But both these two orders have had resolvable problems, this is about the least expensive 40" digital caliper available, it is functional, and I'm tired of sending these things back, so...
Both my examples had virtually identical battery corrosion, showing up as green gunk creeping out from under the cover over the electronics module. The caliper is shipped with the battery installed, and the on/off switch is very easily activated, so I'm sure the first battery is usually drained and corroding long before the caliper is sold. And when I first opened the box on my second example, the power was on. The display was also flashing, indicating that, as delivered, it needs a new battery (LR44 button cell). Ironically the battery compartment was clean on both my examples. Why didn't they clean up the whole thing?
My first example of this caliper came well-packaged from Jack's Tool Shed -- Return was no problem, prepaid, and they were pleasant to deal with. In fact, the return address for the first unit was a repair facility, with instructions from Jack's to remove the corrosion. Unfortunately Jack's did not have a replacement. The second unit came from Toolprice, and was not very well packaged -- No internal padding on one end of the package, and no internal padding around the wooden case. The result was that one end of the wooden case arrived broken loose, and needs to be re-glued.
Also, the scale on both my examples had a joint at the 24 inch mark. I thought at first that the scale had been broken and repaired, but apparently it's a manufacturing convenience. It doesn't affect operation.
So, if you order one of these calipers, prepare to do some work on it when it arrives. Both my examples arrived pretty dirty, so you may want to do some general cleaning, and maybe do a search on battery corrosion removal methods. And, when the caliper is not in use, try to remember to remove that new battery you'll probably buy.

Also, while the description states "Block features a top working surface that is approximately 4-7/8" diameter" it is actually only 3" in diameter. Finally the description of "hardened and ground at top and bottom" implied to me that it would be flat at the bottom, but in fact it's completely hollow.

MITER MASTER PLUS 16" Review

(More customer reviews)First, let me say I've been involved with residential remodeling since the early 80', and own and operate a construction company. I've installed miles of crown in those years and have probably used every method to calculate the required cutting angle from just looking at the corner and setting my saw to the Bosch electronic angle finder. I'd also like to say I have no affiliation with this company, and I've posted virtually the same review on a construction forum so all I did was copy and past this. I don't have that much time to type away reviews like this. Being a quality oriented carpenter I'm a stickler when it comes to quality tools and equipment, and right off the top this is very well made from 1/8" thick polycarbonate plastic. Yeah, plastic, but its the real strong durable stuff made in USA. Now that's not a negative unless you are willing to pay a handsome price for a stainless steel version, (I probably would with this tool) but cost is always a major consideration when manufacturing a product for the masses.
This tool will last a very long time, even with heavy use in the field, and if simple placed back into the plastic sleeve that it comes shipped in, it will last even longer from not getting all scratched in your tool box.
It's an excellent price for the quality given and for the time and materials that will be saved by using this tool.
You know when something is so easy to use you think you're missing something? Well this is the tool.
Take it out of the package, open the two legs, place against and outside or inside corner and VOILA! Done! No charts, no thinking, no scratching your head. It that simple. Just transfer the numbers you see on the gauge to the saw and cut. Oh, I forgot, tighten the wing nut to lock your measurement so the legs don't move once you remove it from the wall. And don't kill the nut, just slightly snug. It's a good idea to snug the nut just a bit before using so the legs will not freely move about, then take your reading and tighten the nut a little more.
Everything you need to know is clearly embossed on the legs for cutting on the flat or propped up. It's designed for someone with no experience with the math that is involved with crown molding. Yes, even my wife can take this tool, place it against the corner and set my saw.
That's just the molding side of this fantastic tool, the other side is designed for framing. So you get a very versatile measuring tool for the money.
I'm not for new gadgetry, especially when someone reinvents the wheel and packages it as the latest and greatest. This tool is not the case. It's truly a unique tool that will get all the other manufactures saying "Why didn't we think of that"
I have other methods I use to determine angles along with my experience and knowledge, but it certainly was not wasted money. It will definitely be used, even if I pass this along to a helper who needs to double check their math when doing crown or framing. But I have to tell you with all my experience I just may use this because it's so darn easy and a big plus is NO batteries required.
This is a must buy for anyone dealing with crown, framing or any type of work that involves the same type of angles.

(More customer reviews)Since I am a woodworker and do most of my carpentry work in a workshop, I have never been satisfied with the results I get from a standard tape measure. The crved blade and loose end hook add up to a lot of potential for inaccuracy. This fast cap tape is a FANTASTIC solution. The flat tape means that I no longer have to wrestle with the tape to get it to lay flat so I can mark a measurement. It can even be wrapped around a round object to accurately give a cirumference measurement. I also appreciate the easy to read and accurate scale on the tape. The hook on the end of the tape has 4 rivets and does not have the any of the slop found on construction tapes. The plastic case has an over-molded rubber coating that is pleasing to the hands. If that were all there was to this tape, it would be enough to justify its cost, but there is more. The built in pencil sharpener is really handy and the small white space on the side of the case is an ingenious place to jot down measurememnts before you forget them.
All in all, its hard to imagine a tape measure that changes the way you work but this thing has been a godsend in my shop. At this price I highly recommend it to all woodworkers.

These types of levels are self-calibrating, in the sense that if you rotate them 180 degrees, they should remain consistent. I'm not sure if it is the bottom surface of the device that is not perfectly level, or if it is the bottom of the clear plastic top that isn't. Either way, it's not a good thing.
