This scale makes taking off drawings in odd scales much easier than using the 1' triangular rule. The only drawbacks are the relative shortness of each tape (they only extend to roughly 2' long) and the springs are very powerful, making it difficult to use if you do not engage the locks.
The time saved by being able to quickly take off a drawing in a non 1/4" or 1/8" scale makes this a worthwile purchase.
For 1/4" or 1/8" takeoffs, I'd still recomend the Lufkin Architect's scale, but this is the only option I've seen for anything other than 1/4" or 1/8" scale.
