I purchased the Disto D5 for laying out foundations for a house I'm building. The D5 is reasonably simple to use. I spent a couple hours playing with it and now feel comfortable using it. I've layed out my batter boards for the foundation to within 1/32 in. accuracy. A level of precision I would have never been able to obtain with a sagging tape measurer. The D5 is compact, and you get a sense of quality when holding it. You simply aim the laser at a surface to be measured and you spot the laser dot or find the item in a cross hair on the LCD screen. The color LCD screen is bright and surprisingly so is the laser dot. Within distances found on a construction site the dot is large enough to see with the unaided eye in full sunlight-surpirse for me. The indirect measurement functions are handy, volume and areas calculations are pretty straight forward. For long measurements 50' or more you will need to steady the instrument (hand shake) and probably could use a tripod. The unit has a flip out bracket on the back to wrap around edges or fit inside corners. The D5 senses the bracked and the tripod screw and tells you where the measurements are referenced from, i.e, front, back, tripod screw, bracket inside corner, bracket outside edge. I bought my unit on Ebay for $450. I'm sure with time the price will drop. I do believe the D5 with it's color display will be the standard that other lasers range finders will be compared too.

With the Leica DISTO D5 Digital Laser Rangefinder, accurate measurements are right at your fingertips, even in bright, outdoor settings and over extended distances. The world's first hand held laser measuring device with a digital view finder and 4X zoom, the dependable D5 features a 2.4-inch color screen for easy reference, a 45-degree tilt sensor, and a full complement of functions that deliver fast and precise on-the-job computations.
With the built-in tilt sensor, the DISTO D5 lets you make indirect measurements and determine level or tilted dimensions up to 45 degrees. Get Measurements Safely and Calculations QuicklyIf you've ever tried to measure a ceiling height while balanced on a ladder, or if you've ever broken an old, metal tape measure while trying to wrap it around a corner, you'll have a special appreciation for the way Leica DISTO series measuring tools work.
Leica DISTO measurers feature clearly labeled keys on the touch pad that let you easily access and control a wide range of features. With convenient shortcut keys for commonly used functions like addition and subtraction, along with area and volume calculators, Leica DISTO measuring tools let you turn individual measurements into useful numbers on the spot.
Unique Full-Color Display and Long-Range Accuracy for Outdoor UseBecause accurate results are only useful if they're easy to read and reflect the correct target point, the DISTO D5's integrated digital Pointfinder offers 4X zoom capabilities and a 2.4-inch color display. The high resolution of this display provides a crystal-clear image to make finding your target at long distances quicker and simpler, and the display is even easy to see in glaring sunshine.
The compact DISTO D5 also showcases Leica's trademarked Power Range Technology, which allows it to offer precise measurements over a range of 0.05 meters (0.16 feet) to 200 meters (650 feet). For use from 100 meters to 200 meters, a target plate (not included) helps maintain accuracy. This pairing of an easy-to-read screen with an extended working range makes the D5 a perfect pick for a wide range of outdoor construction projects.
Clever, Dependable Design Provides PrecisionYou require accurate measurements to prepare for any job, regardless of its size. The Leica DISTO D5's readings are accurate within one millimeter (0.4 inches), which means they are likely to be much more precise than measurements you'll get from using a tape measure.
The Leica DISTO D5's Pythagorean functions include the automatic calculation of room dimensions such as wall areas and peripheral lengths, while trapezium functions help you quickly calculate roof slopes and frontage areas, and triangle functions let you compute the area of multi-cornered rooms. Plus, with a laser dot that is clearly visible, you can always see your target point, making sure you get exactly the measurement you're looking for.
Innovative Construction Ensures UsabilityThe Leica DISTO D5's built-in tilt sensor quickly determines tilts to 45 degrees in either direction without requiring any complicated input from you. The tilt sensor also helps provide you with true horizontal distances, even when there are nearby obstructions, guaranteeing reliable measurements.
The Leica DISTO D5 also features a convenient time delay release option and memory space for up to 20 measurements, so you never have to worry about forgetting an important number after taking a measurement.
A comfortable, ergonomic grip helps the Leica DISTO D5 sit securely in your hand. This also makes it easier to get steady measurements and avoid drops that cause unnecessary wear and tear. The Leica DISTO D5 is also splash- and dust-proof, an important consideration on busy construction sites.
This digital laser rangefinder and measurer is backed by a three-year warranty.
