The spare battery was small and loose in the packaging, so make sure you don't lose it when you open everything. There were no instructions included, but none were needed. Once I changed the battery it worked very well. Mine had a flat base, it was accurate, precise, and repeatable. It measures from 0-6 inches, or it will automatically convert to millimeters (I don't know why the specs say 0-5.). I think this tool is a very good value for the money, especially when Rockler puts it on sale for 39.99.
