This meter is terrible. First, listen to some quotes from the tiny 4 page "manual".
"Thank you for purchase our Products. Please read this manual first before use it. It will tell you how to use it and simply inspect it so as to exert the ruggedization and durable of it's merit..."
Seriously, I'm not making this up! By the way, the poor grammar is not mine! I'm typing this stuff word for word.
Now listen to #6 on the "Notes" page;
"It has a large impact on wood moisture in some conditions, such as Special wood, different temperature, the wood growing up in different place. The simple moisture meter is just based on one kind of wood, and it has not the correction function on Special wood, different temperature, the wood growing up in different place. So the different meter will have the different measuring value."
Now tell me, WHAT????
So when I tell you that the meter gives me a different reading from one side of a piece of split wood to the other, it seems that from the above statement it's not the meter's fault.
I mean how do I know if I have "Special wood"? Or if my wood "grow up in different place"?
Sorry, this meter, as well as it's useless manual, was a waste of my money.
And none of the "simple moisture meter is just based on one kind of wood" talk can be found on the page you view when you order the product.
My unit has the word REMODIFICATION! on the serial number label. I didn't see that on the order page either.
Buy a better meter than this. And I would recommend one made in the good ole USA!

Delmhorst J-LITE 6% to 30% Pin LED Wood Moisture Meter Review

Delmhorst J-LITE 6% to 30% Pin LED Wood Moisture Meter
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I do woodworking projects building furniture for all my family members in my woodshop during the colder months of Indiana winter. I also harvest and kiln dry my own lumber.
I was intially going to buy a less expensive ($60) moisture tester---but reading other's comments convinced me that Delmhorst is a credible company that puts quality even in their lower cost units. I despise purchasing something that works good for a few months and then the electronics simply quit operating, even if it's still under warranty. So I made the decision to purchase the J-lite and have been completely satisfied with the operations of it since purchase.
The design is simple to operate, and seems very consistent in reading moisture content. It's a good little unit for the woodworker that is serious about producing quality woodcraft, but doesn't do it everyday.
Even if you purchase the material for your projects, this is an essential tool when buying the wood---not all "kiln dried" wood is the same. Good product.

A reliable and versatile tool that's easy for novice woodworkers, the Delmhorst J-LITE Wood Moisture Meter features a microcontroller circuit for accuracy and reliability. Ideal for hobbyists, craftspeople, and home inspectors, this handheld meter measures moisture from 6 to 30 percent and displays results using 12 LEDs, making it easy to read in dark or dimly lit areas.
Versatile Meter with Microcontroller CircuitThe Delmhorst J-LITE delivers accurate moisture readings, so you can create high-quality finished wood products. With its range of capabilities, the meter can be relied upon in a wide array of scenarios, from home inspections to crafting projects.
The J-LITE is specially calibrated for Douglas Fir at 70 degrees Fahrenheit, but includes both temperature and species correction charts.
12 LEDs Show Bright, Accurate ReadingsThis meter works quickly to warn you of problem moisture levels, helping to minimize shrinkage, cracks, and splits in finished wood products. Its 12 bright LEDs indicate your readings, making this feature ideal for those who work in dark or dimly lit areas.
The J-LITE gauges moisture from 6 to 30 percent--measuring from dry conditions (ideal for fine furniture) up to the fiber saturation point (about 24 to 30 percent). The large range means the meter can be used in high-humidity and low-humidity environments.
Durable Case with Built-In Handle for PortabilityThe Delmhorst J-LITE features a functional case with a built-in handle, which allows you to keep the meter at your fingertips. And for those times when you're using one of your hands to stabilize a work piece, this meter comes to your aid with its easy, one-handed operation.
Pin-Type Meter with Electrode Connector Delivers Superior ResultsThe Delmhorst J-LITE's pin-type meter uses two pins that penetrate wood to a depth of 5/16 inch. Pin-type meters provide more accurate readings than non-penetrating meters because their tips come into direct contact with the wood fiber. If you ever deal with wood that has been exposed to surface moisture such as rain, a pin meter is the best measurement tool because its readings are not skewed by this factor.
Plus, the Delmhorst J-LITE is built with a special connector for the Delmhorst Delmhorst 26-ES external electrode (sold separately), which allows you to take surface and core moisture content readings to a maximum depth of 1-1/16 inch.
The Delmhorst J-LITE is backed by a three-year warranty.
What's in the BoxDelmhorst J-LITE 6 to 30-Percent Pin LED Wood Moisture Meter, batteries, carrying case, and extra set of pins.

General Tools MMD5NP Non-Invasive Moisture Meter Review

General Tools MMD5NP Non-Invasive Moisture Meter

I was excited to receive this moisture meter, as I had a set of resawn walnut boards to check for uneven moisture content on the inside and outside faces. My excitement turned to mild concern when I started to read the instructions: "Press either button to active the sensor". OK, I can roll with that, I guess, although a later item, "Buzzer sounds when the reading changes every increasing digit" left me somewhat bemused. Funnily enough, the instructions also included a disclaimer: "Notice: we are not responsible for typographical errors". Um, OK, then who is responsible?
Anyway, I "actived" the sensor, pressed it as described to one of my boards and...got a reading of 59.9% (the maximum). "Hmm", I thought, "those boards have been drying for two years - that can't be right." So, I tried a piece of beech, nice and dry when I bought it, that's been in my shop for a year or so, planed mirror smooth and thus eliminating the chance that a rough surface could be the problem, and got a reading of 8.0%. "That's more like it!", I thought, "Maybe my first attempt was a just a fluke." Then I re-measured the beech that had given me a believable reading. This time, I got 14%. Another attempt netted me 29%, then 7.4%. So, I tried a few other pieces of wood, with similarly wildly varying results. Fooling around with the unit, I found that pressing more on one corner or the other would cause huge swings in the reported measurement. When I held it in my left hand, I got a different result than when I held it in my right hand. Five minutes later, it was back in its box and on its way to the Amazon returns department.
Maybe this was just a defective unit. Who knows?

If you have a couple hundred dollars to blow, you can waste your money on one of those obscenely overpriced name brand moisture meters. If you're looking for something that performs comparatively just as well, but you don't want to spend a fortune, look no further. It may not look as pretty or have a digital display, but it performs the same basic function just as well as any of the higher priced models. I've been using mine for my home inspection business since I purchased it about a year ago. I haven't had a problem with it's accuracy yet and it's very easy to operate. The only complaint is that it's too easy for the power switch to turn on when it's sliding around in your tool box. I went through alot of 9V batteries before I found out that SONIN offers a storage case for it. It was very inexpensive and well worth it in what I save in battery money. As for the Meter, this is the best price I've seen it for so far. I've seen it 2-3X this price on other web sites and paid much more for mine from a home inspection equipment supplier.

HQRP JT-4G Wood / Firewood Moisture Meter - Wood, Firewood, Wall Damp Meter 4-Pins and Home Inspection Tool Review

HQRP JT-4G Wood / Firewood Moisture Meter - Wood, Firewood, Wall Damp Meter 4-Pins and Home Inspection Tool
Average Reviews:

I bought this meter about 1 month ago because my firewood was not burning as well as I had hoped, and I wanted to diagnose the problem. I have found the JT-4G meter to be useful for this purpose.
I can't vouch for the absolute accuracy of its readings (I don't have an independent method for testing this), but at least the relative values make sense. My logs, nominally 16" long and mostly oak, maple and some birch, were split and dried for 1 or in some cases 2 seasons (in Massachusetts, during two unusually wet summers). The moisture readings at the cut ends are typically around 15-20%, which is within the recommended range for firewood. However, when I re-split them to diagnose the problem, I found a consistent pattern of higher moisture readings in the middle of the newly exposed surfaces (typically 25-30%). Thus, the meter has confirmed that my logs are drying primarily from the cut ends and that they have not been dried for long enough. Birch logs gave lower readings than oak or maple - perhaps because birch dries better or perhaps because the calibration of the device is not absolutely precise across different tree species. Commercial pine lumber (2x4's) gave readings around 5% or lower - ie much drier, as one would expect.
I also checked whether the orientation of the pins relative to the grain makes a difference, ie whether you align the long gaps with the grain or across the grain, or whether you stick the pins into the transverse cut such that they are parallel to the rain. In general my readings were consistent between the three orientations. So the orientation doesn't seem to matter.
The meter is easy to use. The 4 pins seem reasonably strong, although my intuition is that they could probably bend if I pushed with maximum strength. You do need to push a bit - I find that if they are not properly pushed into the wood, I get artifactually low readings. My sense is that once they are pushed in beyond 1mm or so, further pushing has little effect (that's important - the meter would be unreliable if the reading were proportional to the force, but once beyond a certain threshold I don't think this is the case).
Minor gripes - the yellow cap is difficult to remove, and the instructions are written in poor English, although the meaning is clear enough. It recommends checking the calibration by pressing it onto your fingertip - this worked as advertised. (I wonder whether the reading depends on skin conductance, and whether you could also use the device as a polygraph. But that's an experiment for another day....)
There are much more expensive meters available - I assume woodworkers who care about precision or about not scratching the surface would choose those more expensive models. But for testing your firewood this one seems to get the job done.
