Johnson Level & Tool 405 Contractor Brass Stair / Square Gauges, 2-Pack Review

Johnson Level and Tool 405 Contractor Brass Stair / Square Gauges, 2-Pack
Average Reviews:

I've been a builder for 40 years and started using the clamps with my Dad, who was also a builder in New England. With the proliferation of speed squares it seems today's generation of carpenters has forgotten how to use a framing square. These clamps without a doubt are one of the handiest items around for laying out stair stringers and rafters (common, hip and valley). For common rafters one clamp goes on the run side of the framing square (12 inches)and the other clamp goes on the rise side, whatever the rise is 5, 8, 12 inches. Mark off the plumb line for the exterior wall and mark and move the square times the number of feet of run (1/2 the total span). The last plumb line is the center of the ridge. Back off 3/4 of an inch and you have the perfect pattern to cut the rest of your rafters. The three S's short, sweet and simple. They work great for stair layouts also. A great tool and buy for the price.

Stanley 47-483 100 FatMax Xtreme Chalk Box 2 Piece Set with 4 oz Bottle of Stanley Red Chalk Review

Stanley 47-483 100 FatMax Xtreme Chalk Box 2 Piece Set with 4 oz Bottle of Stanley Red Chalk

I'm a framer and have gone through many reels. I really like the "Xtreme's" fast retrieve(5:1 gears) and release(crank button). The window is nice to see the chalk, although we'll see how long until it stains or scratches to the point of not seeing in. The new style black and yellow FatMax will be plastic, where the Xtreme is aluminum. It will also be in this shape instead of the old heart-like shaped one. (That one was too big, for me, anyway.) I will, then, get the new style of that one, too. It, too, is suposed to have a chalk window. I have only seen the new FatMax on Stanleys site, so far.(As of 6/6/07)
The new styles seemed a little bulky at first, but now, I am right at home with it and so is everyone else trying to use mine.
......A big plus, is that I have changed all of my chalk boxes to .9 mm nylon braided white fishing trot line. Much thinner & accurate lines, stronger, doesn't tear up as fast, and doesn't unravel with the first nick in it. You can find it much cheaper than the replacement chalklines, too.
I am very happy with this new whole set up! Definately Recommended!

I own a couple 25' Fat Max tapes, and really like them, so I decided to give this one a try.It is a good tool but bare in mind that the 3:1 gear ratio is 1 crank of the handle for 3 revolutions of the internal spool. This make for a fast rewind but not ease of cranking.I felt I was about to break the handle off the first time I realed it in .It seems to be getting looser with wear though. This may not be typical of each tape,I may have received an extra tight one.I dought that you will be dissapointed.

Stanley 30-825 25-Foot-by-1-Inch LeverLock Tape Rule Review

Stanley 30-825 25-Foot-by-1-Inch LeverLock Tape Rule
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I own a cabinet shop and have used Leverlocks since they were 1st introduced, about 15-20 years ago and for the life of me I can't understand why Stanley would do away with the old design to replace it with this far inferior design. The leverlock idea is superior to any other, but this new design has many flaws, the worst being that button that's supposed to keep the tape locked, probably designed by a 23 year old engineer. The button won't stay where you put it, and at times virtually makes the leverlock idea inoperable. I find myself spending more time fiddling with that freakin' button than measuring. The case is too small. It's like trying pitch a golf ball instead of a baseball. Just doesn't fill up the hand like it should. The tape is flimsy and crimps easily. The numbers and marks wear much more quickly than the old neons. I found 2 NOS black 3/4" x 25' leverlocks on ebay and I plan to guard them with my life, although I really need the 1" model. If you measure for a living, hang onto your money 'til you can find an old neon model.

A high-visibility yellow color case makes this tape rule easy to find in your tool box, cabinet or on the job. A convenient belt clip is fastened on back of the case. Ergonomically-designed with a rubber grip and rubberized blade locking lever, this non-slip tape rule measures 1-inch-by-25-feet. A red blade lock override button allows the tape to be used in two modes. When the button is set with the locked padlock icon pushed out, the blade will not retract unless the user depresses the black lever on the bottom of the tape rule case. When the button is set with the unlocked padlock icon pushed out, the blade extends and retracts freely.

Stanley 30-982 1/2-Inch-by-12 Yellow Tape Rule
Average Reviews:

I own a small metalworking shop. This particular tape measure has been used everyday for the past 6 +/- years. To this day it pulls out easily, locks and holds the tape then "zips" back into the case when unlocked. Even after being dropped and abused.
Being bright green also helps to quickly target it, especially when it gets misplaced.
I wouldn't trade my little tape for anything.
Looking for a small 12' tape? You just found the best.

Komelon SL2825 Self Lock 25-Foot Power Tape Review

Komelon SL2825 Self Lock 25-Foot Power Tape
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought the 16 foot version of this, which I find an ideal length for me. I'm not a pro contractor, but a very busy weekend/evening handyman type.
Here's how I formed my opinion:
PROS:
I like any tape measure that locks automatically, like these do - as opposed to the powerlock's etc where you have to manually lock them to hold them open. 99% of the time if I'm pulling the tape out, I want it to stay out until I'm done with it. In fact, I can't really even think of any application where this would be a disadvantage.
The rubber coating on the body, combined with curves in right places give you a very confident grip, even when it's wet. It fits very comfortably in your hand.
I like the bright green color so the tape isn't camouflaged when I put it down somewhere. They manage to do the obnoxious color in a good way without trying to make it look like some kind of space aged sneaker. A trend I just never understood.
I hate a tape with too powerful a return spring. This one isn't bad, I don't get the same "man, I'm glad my fingers were clear of that!" feeling that I get with some others. Yet it's strong enough to know for sure that it's coming all the way back.
The weight of the whole thing is just about right. This of course may be because I got the 16 foot version - so I should explain why I like 16 feet better than 20 or 25. I do mostly remodeling/finish carpentry work, and 90% of my measuring is done under 10 feet. 9.9% is done under 20 feet, and that final .1% is over 20 feet where I can just grab a larger tape.
One advantage to a smaller tape measure is that you don't have to wrestle with them too much when when you have to put it down on an even surface while you mark something. They want to fall over and slide. With a light one, you can control the whole body of the measure fairly easily through the tape itself if the thing tries to move. A heavy one will just yank the tape from your fingers if it falls off the board you're laid out on, and it's hard to nudge around just by the tape if you need to make some adjustments in that laid out position.
I drop tested the tape the first day I used it, only from about 4' onto a paved driveway. It wasn't even scuffed, and it didn't make the painful noise a less-well-ruberized tape would have made. It just bounced. I drop things - a lot - so that made me happy.
I like the plastic coating on the tape itself. It makes me hope that it's not going to get all rusty - but only time will tell.
CONS:
The return button is just a little too small. I guess maybe I'm so used to an old lever-lock, and I expect to be able to just grab from any angle and squeeze the thing to get it to return the tape. I think I'll eventually get used to it, but at the moment I do prefer the (old) stanley lever lock in this regard. Unfortunately the quality of the stanley leverlock has dropped off the charts. Following the manufacturing trend in the US, Stanley now only makes toys that look like the old leverlocks.
There are other tapes out there that use that leverlock design - so I may have to check them out someday, but as of yet, I haven't. This button isn't horrible, it's just marginally less convenient.
Size - it doesn't fit well in my toolbelt's tape holder. I normally clip tapes to my jean's pocket, and this one works well for that, but when I do use my leather tool belt, I like to use that belt's tape holder. This tape only fits into it in one direction, making it too inconvenient to use. My toolbelt's kind of old, and seems to be designed almost specifically for a stanley tape, so that is what I leave in my toolbelt now. I'm not sure if new toolbelt makers have awakened to the fact that there are other tape measure's out there now. Maybe they have.
That's a lot of talk for a $5 tool, but if you made it this far, looks like I'm not the only one who over thinks these kinds of purchases!
You'll be happy enough with this tape. It's not perfect, but you're not going to regret owning it either. I've tried some others, and this one is my favorite so far. I'll update here if that changes.

Stanley 33-212 12-Foot PowerLock Tape Rule Review

Stanley 33-212 12-Foot PowerLock Tape Rule
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As something I use for home tasks and occasionally tote to a furniture store, I've never given much thought to tape measures. Mostly I've used freebies that came as a promotional item. Typically these had 1/4" blades, difficult to read markings and no locking mechanism.
On a whim one day I bought this 12' measure with a 3/4" blade, and the resulting improvement is tremendous. The wider blade is easier to extend for longer distances without it bending, and the markings are substantially easier to read. The lock is very useful for situations in which you can't apply both hands simultaneously. (I'm sure all of this is obvious to anyone who regularly uses tape measures, but to those who've just made do with whatever happened to be in the tool drawer, it's the sort of thing you wouldn't notice until you experienced the improvements.)
The Stanley is well crafted, with excellent tension for blade recall and a well-positioned locking switch. The removable belt-clip makes it especially easy to tote around.
Take one with you the next time you visit Ikea and see how many people ask to borrow it!

Standout is undoubtedly very important to save time when working by yourself. One IMPORTANT thing to know before you buy this quality measuring tape is that due to its heavy end clip and blade, it has a comparatively poor standout when measuring on its side (like when you're measuring siding, etc), and you'll measure sideways a large percentage of the time. The regular Stanley Fat Max tapes have a much longer standout on their side. I've also noticed that the sides of the blades seem to dent very easily, impairing smoothness. It makes me wonder about their durability. I love the new Bostitch tool line, but am going to stay with the Stanley Fat Max tapes.

Stanley 10-989 Contractor Grade Swivel-Lock Retractable Utility Knife Review

Stanley 10-989 Contractor Grade Swivel-Lock Retractable Utility Knife
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This knife is all but an abomination. I purchased more than 5 working as facilities engineer when they first arrived on the market more than 6 years ago. I bought a few more later on to see if it was just a manufacturing issue or a design issue.....it's both. Here's some highlights. From a stability view, the knife is quite robust and has a solid feel. From a usability side, this this thing is horrible. The die cast design is poor at best. Many of the knives I bought provided extreme difficulty in retracting and extending the blade without a doubt. Some of the knives simply wouldn't move. Inserting the blade is not intuitive but does work IF the current blade doesn't jam in the unit upon twisting the cover open (infrequent). If you put the blade in wrong, watch your fingers, the cover binds and the blade proves a bit dangerous to extract. My recommendation: Stanley should have stopped selling these things shortly after launching. A plastic housing may have been more user friendly. For more reviews of similar products see scooter72's review of Stanley knife 10-788. There is a pattern. Fred M.
