Stanley 46-123 12-Inch Contractor Grade Combination Square Review

Stanley 46-123 12-Inch Contractor Grade Combination Square
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For $17 at Tru Value, this is the square to buy. Do not even think about plan B. I looked at the squares make by Empire, Johnson & the other Stanley squares at Home Depot & Lowes, and could not find one that was square compared to the other combination or framing squares in the stores, except for the Stanley 46-123 or the Starrett squares. I'm a struggling novice woodworker who does not need to be fooled by tools that claim to work but leave you with a false sense of security, until the end when nothing lines up & you have no clue why. I want a square to be square. Unless you want to pay $60-70 for a Starrett, I recommend the 46-123 and getting a square square.

Johnson Level & Tool 405 Contractor Brass Stair / Square Gauges, 2-Pack Review

Johnson Level and Tool 405 Contractor Brass Stair / Square Gauges, 2-Pack
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've been a builder for 40 years and started using the clamps with my Dad, who was also a builder in New England. With the proliferation of speed squares it seems today's generation of carpenters has forgotten how to use a framing square. These clamps without a doubt are one of the handiest items around for laying out stair stringers and rafters (common, hip and valley). For common rafters one clamp goes on the run side of the framing square (12 inches)and the other clamp goes on the rise side, whatever the rise is 5, 8, 12 inches. Mark off the plumb line for the exterior wall and mark and move the square times the number of feet of run (1/2 the total span). The last plumb line is the center of the ridge. Back off 3/4 of an inch and you have the perfect pattern to cut the rest of your rafters. The three S's short, sweet and simple. They work great for stair layouts also. A great tool and buy for the price.

Stanley 47-483 100 FatMax Xtreme Chalk Box 2 Piece Set with 4 oz Bottle of Stanley Red Chalk Review

Stanley 47-483 100 FatMax Xtreme Chalk Box 2 Piece Set with 4 oz Bottle of Stanley Red Chalk
Average Reviews:

I'm a framer and have gone through many reels. I really like the "Xtreme's" fast retrieve(5:1 gears) and release(crank button). The window is nice to see the chalk, although we'll see how long until it stains or scratches to the point of not seeing in. The new style black and yellow FatMax will be plastic, where the Xtreme is aluminum. It will also be in this shape instead of the old heart-like shaped one. (That one was too big, for me, anyway.) I will, then, get the new style of that one, too. It, too, is suposed to have a chalk window. I have only seen the new FatMax on Stanleys site, so far.(As of 6/6/07)
The new styles seemed a little bulky at first, but now, I am right at home with it and so is everyone else trying to use mine.
......A big plus, is that I have changed all of my chalk boxes to .9 mm nylon braided white fishing trot line. Much thinner & accurate lines, stronger, doesn't tear up as fast, and doesn't unravel with the first nick in it. You can find it much cheaper than the replacement chalklines, too.
I am very happy with this new whole set up! Definately Recommended!

Stanley 30-825 25-Foot-by-1-Inch LeverLock Tape Rule Review

Stanley 30-825 25-Foot-by-1-Inch LeverLock Tape Rule
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I own a cabinet shop and have used Leverlocks since they were 1st introduced, about 15-20 years ago and for the life of me I can't understand why Stanley would do away with the old design to replace it with this far inferior design. The leverlock idea is superior to any other, but this new design has many flaws, the worst being that button that's supposed to keep the tape locked, probably designed by a 23 year old engineer. The button won't stay where you put it, and at times virtually makes the leverlock idea inoperable. I find myself spending more time fiddling with that freakin' button than measuring. The case is too small. It's like trying pitch a golf ball instead of a baseball. Just doesn't fill up the hand like it should. The tape is flimsy and crimps easily. The numbers and marks wear much more quickly than the old neons. I found 2 NOS black 3/4" x 25' leverlocks on ebay and I plan to guard them with my life, although I really need the 1" model. If you measure for a living, hang onto your money 'til you can find an old neon model.

CST/Berger TLM100 Laser Distance Measurer Review

CST/Berger TLM100 Laser Distance Measurer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I saw press releases about this product and was one of the first people to purchase it, through homedepot.com for more money than amazon is currently asking.
It is well built, intuitive and easy to use.
Note that this Tru Laser, is truly a laser measuring device. That means the little laser beam takes the measurement - whatever it is shining on is what you measure.
Don't confuse this with the ubiquitous "sonic measurers" that use a laser pointer. Those use sound waves which are inaccurate and wide, making it frustrating/impossible to measure anything small or fine.
The product designers did an outstanding job. I found that after reading the short instruction sheet (1 big page) I was able to remember which button to press for each function.
This device greatly enhances productivity and accuracy compared to using a tape measure or yardstick. You probably would not us it for shorter measurements, say less than 18 inches but for anything over that it's the weapon of choice.
The TruLaser is excellent for quickly and accurately measuring home dimensions. For basic things like room dimensions (wall to wall distance, ceiling height, ...) it's excellent. Trying to accurately measure the height of a vaulted ceiling with a tape measure requires a ladder, and sometimes two people. With this device one person can do the job in about 10 seconds.
I was pleasantly surprised to find I could measure more things than I had hoped for. As long as you can catch an edge, the laser is usually able to take a reading (it tells you if it cannot). So you can measure the inside dimensions of a window (if it's larger than 18 inches or so), and you can measure how far the window is from the doorway or an adjacent window (assuming you can catch a piece of trim with the laser).
The product promises 1/4 inch accuracy at up to 100 feet range.
I haven't done exhaustive tests, but it in most cases I tried (30 feet or less) the accuracy was better than promised.
After using the Tru Laser for a few days I simply would not be without it - a tape measure seems so cumbersome and inefficient
in comparison.
I highly recommend this item.

Johnson Level & Tool 748 48-Inch Laminated Wood Level Review

Johnson Level and Tool 748 48-Inch Laminated Wood Level
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased 2 of these levels several years ago as gifts for family members, thining they were high quality tools. I purchased a 3rd for myself (about a year later) for use in a remodeling project but did not use it for many months. I did not check the accuracy of the level until several of the door frames I built looked skewed. To my dismay, the level was not even close to true. The big box store refused to take it back ( understandably, due to the age of the purchase) so I contacted Johnson Level directly and arranged a warranty replacement. They shipped me new vials even though they are not user replaceable (they are glued in place). A second call ensured a new level would be sent. The new level came with the notes taken by the customer care manager. The note asked that I be shipped a TESTED AND CERTIFIED ACCURATE level. The NEW level is worse than the unit it was meant to replace. Neither face of the level comes close to passing the "end-to-end" test. I have since checked both of the levels I purchased as gifts for family members and they are just as bad.
What can I say... Nice people, horrible quality control and a product that is useless as a level even for the most crude jobs.

Stanley 45-910 24-Inch x 2-Inch Steel Rafter/Roofing Square (English) Review

Stanley 45-910 24-Inch x 2-Inch Steel Rafter/Roofing Square (English)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Maybe I expect too much from a rafter square, but the one I received was not perfectly square. I bought this square to use with a Veritas square fence. I ended up shimming one end of the fence with three pieces of paper to make it square. I don't know if there is such a thing as a perfect rafter square. I bought this one to build cabinets and furniture which is not the intent of the product, so I shouldn't complain. For framing it would probably be satisfactory. The yellow print on the black background is sharp and easy on the eyes. The product is definitely lighter than a steel square so therefore easier to handle. The description claims that it is made from extra thick aluminum. It is no thicker than any other aluminum framing square I've seen.

Stanley 33-212 12-Foot PowerLock Tape Rule Review

Stanley 33-212 12-Foot PowerLock Tape Rule
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As something I use for home tasks and occasionally tote to a furniture store, I've never given much thought to tape measures. Mostly I've used freebies that came as a promotional item. Typically these had 1/4" blades, difficult to read markings and no locking mechanism.
On a whim one day I bought this 12' measure with a 3/4" blade, and the resulting improvement is tremendous. The wider blade is easier to extend for longer distances without it bending, and the markings are substantially easier to read. The lock is very useful for situations in which you can't apply both hands simultaneously. (I'm sure all of this is obvious to anyone who regularly uses tape measures, but to those who've just made do with whatever happened to be in the tool drawer, it's the sort of thing you wouldn't notice until you experienced the improvements.)
The Stanley is well crafted, with excellent tension for blade recall and a well-positioned locking switch. The removable belt-clip makes it especially easy to tote around.
Take one with you the next time you visit Ikea and see how many people ask to borrow it!

Here's the thing; I trust people, and when you're working on a construction site, that's a stupid assumption. You lay down a tool, and 30 seconds later it's gone. But this baby is so hideously ugly and looks so cheap, that it's very unlikely anyone would steal it. And if they do, you'll be able to see it anywhere in a fifty-mile radius, because its green neon glow will be visible even beyond the horizon. But despite all that, it works beautifully, it's light, and even the goofy ruler comes in handy every once in a while. And it's inexpensive. I'm sure my $40 level will disappear long before this ugly bargain.
Buy it, and proudly show that you're secure in your self-esteem. Cuz this baby is gonna get you laughed off the construction site. Hey, I don't care, let 'em laugh. Who needs 'em anyway? Not me. I don't care. It doesn't bother me. Really. Hmmmm. Maybe I can spray paint it black...

I use these series of levels for tilework. I pull allot of mud by hand and EM71 are perfect. No where for

Average Reviews:

This tape was almost new when the end got caught in a crack between two boards. I pulled it out with some moderate force - not nearly enough to damage the tape - so I thought. The result was that the tape now automatically twists and collapses when extended making it totally useless as a normal carpenter tape measure. I believe the cause is poor-quality steel in the tape itself. I don't recommend this product.

This is a great little level. The vials have four lines, instead of just two, for centering, which really helps get it bubble (and therefore the level) in exactly the right place. The black rubber moldings around the tips help protect the most vulnerable areas of the tool, while making it easier to hold. It has a magnet in the base strong enough to hold it onto a pipe or other metal object. The little light inside makes seeing the bubble in low light conditions a breeze.

This is a very well made product. Very compact and high quality. It pulls out easily and retracts smoothly with confidence. It has an inches-in-diameter ruler on the other side of the regular inch ruler. You lay the tape over the circumference and the ruler reads out the diameter (instead of the circumference itself) in inches, thus saving you from doing the calculation for the conversion. But frankly, I seldom use this feature and would have preferred an international centimeter ruler (denary basis of course) on the other side. However, I still would give it five star for its own design even though I prefer something different.
