Stanley 46-123 12-Inch Contractor Grade Combination Square Review

Stanley 46-123 12-Inch Contractor Grade Combination Square
Average Reviews:

For $17 at Tru Value, this is the square to buy. Do not even think about plan B. I looked at the squares make by Empire, Johnson & the other Stanley squares at Home Depot & Lowes, and could not find one that was square compared to the other combination or framing squares in the stores, except for the Stanley 46-123 or the Starrett squares. I'm a struggling novice woodworker who does not need to be fooled by tools that claim to work but leave you with a false sense of security, until the end when nothing lines up & you have no clue why. I want a square to be square. Unless you want to pay $60-70 for a Starrett, I recommend the 46-123 and getting a square square.

This framing square was shipped in a piece of flat cardboard with no consideration to protecting it from dropping or bending. It was bent so badly that it is completely useless for any purpose. When I called the company they offered to send another one. I declined because there is no assurance they will take any steps to improve the packaging in order to protect the tool.
These things are readily available at your local hardware store, although not at this low price. I recommend paying full price for one at your local hardware store. In the long run you will save time and money.

Johnson Level & Tool 405 Contractor Brass Stair / Square Gauges, 2-Pack Review

Johnson Level and Tool 405 Contractor Brass Stair / Square Gauges, 2-Pack
Average Reviews:

I've been a builder for 40 years and started using the clamps with my Dad, who was also a builder in New England. With the proliferation of speed squares it seems today's generation of carpenters has forgotten how to use a framing square. These clamps without a doubt are one of the handiest items around for laying out stair stringers and rafters (common, hip and valley). For common rafters one clamp goes on the run side of the framing square (12 inches)and the other clamp goes on the rise side, whatever the rise is 5, 8, 12 inches. Mark off the plumb line for the exterior wall and mark and move the square times the number of feet of run (1/2 the total span). The last plumb line is the center of the ridge. Back off 3/4 of an inch and you have the perfect pattern to cut the rest of your rafters. The three S's short, sweet and simple. They work great for stair layouts also. A great tool and buy for the price.

Starrett 435-12-4R Combination Square with square head, center head, and reversible protractor head and blade Review

Starrett 435-12-4R Combination Square with square head, center head, and reversible protractor head and blade
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have been collecting and using antique, or just old, tools for decades. In my collection, I have several lower priced and previously owned combination squares. Having been an engineer for 38 years, and having always admired the quality of Starrett measuring equipment, I recently decided to splurge by ordering a new Starrett Precision Combo Cast Iron Square 4 Piece Set with Reversible Protractor Head.
After receiving the new combination set, I was very disappointed to discover that it contained several sharp edges and corners from machining. Believing that this must be an oversight, the set was returned to Starrett for repair. This turned out to be a complete waste of time. One month later, the set was returned to me in the same condition. I finished the tool manufacturing process myself by removing the sharp edges and corners with a jeweler's file and a small Arkansas stone.
The new combination set looks very similar to an old Lufkin Rule Co. set that I own; however, I don't expect the Lufkin set to cut me.
Perhaps one advantage of using antique, or previously owned tools is that they don't normally have sharp edges and corners that will cut you during normal use.

Complete combination set feature the combination square with a center head and with a reversible protractor. As the name indicates, this tool can be used for many different purposes - a complete substitute for a whole set of common solid try squares, a 45 degree miter, a depth gauge, a height gauge, a marking or scribing gauge, a level, a plumb and, by withdrawing the blade, it can also be used as a precision rule. This saves littering the workbench with too many tools, each being necessary but may be used less. This results in the goal of all good craftsmen - better accuracy and greater efficiency.

Promax MT87101 24-Inch Combination Square Review

Promax MT87101 24-Inch Combination Square
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought both the 24" and the 48" models of these combination squares. Keeping in mind that these are NOT just cheap versions of Starrett squares, which I also own but in smaller versions. These are not bad tools for the money, at all. They are not heavy duty, well machined and detailed squares like the Starretts, but they are serviceable for many applications.
For purposes of review, both tools appear to be identical excepting in length of the blade.
The blades are satin finished aluminum, about 5mm thick at the thickest parts, which is fine for keeping weight down. The numbers and graduations (both SAE and metric) are black, probably anodized, printed in fairly large size and are only on one side of the blade. The other side of the blade has a locking channel, which is a nice touch, considering the price of these units. The numbers and graduations will eventually wear off with use, but they are in a recessed portion of the blade which will help reduce that problem, mainly restricting the problem to the movement of the square and 45 degree heads. One end of the blade has a 3/8 hole for hanging the tool on a hook. The markings stop about 3 inches short of this end of the blade, leaving only one end of the blade useful for measurements.
The locking mechanisms on both the square and 45 degree heads are a little fussy and require more force to lock than I'd like. But, they will lock and if you're careful, will lock at the precise 90 and 45 degree points. If you're not careful and don't ensure that the head is securely locked, it can move slightly, changing the angles by several degrees.
The bubble level and scribe are both in the square head. The scribe is a screw-in type, which is a nice touch, but the point isn't very sharp and probably wouldn't last long being used on steel surfaces. The bubble level can work, but the markings are much larger than the bubble, so you have to have a pretty good eye to put them on level.
Packaging and shipping of these products from the factory is what prompted 4 stars instead of 5. They are apparently only protected by a plastic bag, no box, when shipped from the factory and worse, the heads are not locked down for shipment. Both tools that I received had wear marks on the blades, from movement of the heads during shipment. I have some photos that I will try to add to the image section to show this. This doesn't alter the usefulness of the tool, but it's an annoyance that could easily have been avoided by the factory. Again, the price of these units being so low, forgives a lot of sin.

Average Reviews:

If you use a square frequently, do treat yourself to a good one. Yup, they're expensive, but these folks earn their money doing wonderful metalwork. This is a quality of metalcasting, milling, etching and finish you just don't see very often. If you're like me, you'll find the resulting precision inspirational, useful, and a pleasure to use.
Cheap squares are no fun at all, sticky, and like as not, not even square. In contrast, this 6" Starrett is simply substantial. I also use a 12" Mitutoyo set that's equally supurb. It's a one-time investment I enjoy every time I use it.

Stanley 45-910 24-Inch x 2-Inch Steel Rafter/Roofing Square (English)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Maybe I expect too much from a rafter square, but the one I received was not perfectly square. I bought this square to use with a Veritas square fence. I ended up shimming one end of the fence with three pieces of paper to make it square. I don't know if there is such a thing as a perfect rafter square. I bought this one to build cabinets and furniture which is not the intent of the product, so I shouldn't complain. For framing it would probably be satisfactory. The yellow print on the black background is sharp and easy on the eyes. The product is definitely lighter than a steel square so therefore easier to handle. The description claims that it is made from extra thick aluminum. It is no thicker than any other aluminum framing square I've seen.

Johnson Level & Tool 480 8-Inch Hardwood Try Square Review

Johnson Level and Tool 480 8-Inch Hardwood Try Square
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a great square, but I bought it with limited expectations. I'm a professional woodworker, and I wanted a tool that I could carry around in my apron all day and not worry about dropping. It's not the kind of measurement tool that arrives in a mink lined, temperature controlled shrine with a 742 page manual explaining how to properly operate, and care for, your new square.
When I drop my tape measure, or need to make a precise cut from the tape, I check it against a standard and make an adjustment if needed. When I drop this square, or need to make a precise set up, I also check it and adjust if needed. To adjust it, simply place the handle against a known, straight edge, and draw a line against the blade. Then, flip the square over, and check the same edge of the blade against the line. If it's out, give the end of the blade a firm tap on a hard surface (in the proper direction) and repeat the process until the freshly drawn line and the blade line up.
On the bright side, this square is as square as you maintain it, but it IS maintainable. Personally, I don't use the rule on the blade for precise measurements, so it may, or may not, suit your needs in that respect. The dark side is relatively limited based on my expectations. The square arrived with significant burrs on the blade tip. Those were easily removed with a file. Other than that, the rule has a reflective finish, and I would have preferred matte.
For the price, it's a great square, and it's as square as I make it.

I had borrowed a friend's for a hardwood floor project and found myself lost with only a tape measure. I end up with much more accurate marks and find it very helpful to be able to just beam a line down a 6' piece of wood vs fighting a tapemeasure & introducing more error. For $20 it's a steal. Curiously, the Bosch model that my local Home Depot started carrying (at twice the price) is IDENTICAL to this unit, only cast in blue/grey plastic vs yellow/black. Which is why I got mine from the 'zon.

Grizzly G9787 6 pc. Caliper, Micrometer, Combination Square Set Review

Grizzly G9787 6 pc. Caliper, Micrometer, Combination Square Set
Average Reviews:

The caliper: excellent. Measures outside, inside and depth, locks to act as a gauge. Ditto for micrometer, though I don't really use it that much.
The combination square sees use almost constantly. The rule is very nice. Markings are etched and easy to read. All heads have very smooth faces, and a confidence-inspiring heft. Center head, in addition to its main purpose, also makes and excellent saddle square. Unlike with other reviewer, my protractor head rotates smoothly when screws are loosened, and holds tight when tightened.
Attaching the heads to the rule IS a bit finicky at first, since one has to hold the screw just so in order to align the tab that goes into rule's groove - but after a bit of use, you develop a 'feel' for it.

Got it as a present. My Empire square is very true; within .002" over the twelve inch length. That makes it good enough for most carpentry jobs. No, it isn't a Starrett, but I don't want to take my dad's fine old Starrett out of the drawer except for critical set-ups and super precise (fine) joinery INSIDE the shop. Everyone needs a Starrett for the super-accurate fine work in your shop. But everyone needs at least one decent square they don't have to "baby."

Swanson 6-Inch Combo Square (Cast Zinc Body, Stainless Steel Blade and Brass Bolt) Review

Swanson 6-Inch Combo Square (Cast Zinc Body, Stainless Steel Blade and Brass Bolt)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For the price of this combination square it really is a steal. The rule part of the square is made of stainless steel and has easily readable black letters that have been etched into the face of the rule so it won't scratch off. It has a plethora of measurements including 1/8ths inch, 1/16ths, and 1/32nds as well as centimeters. The zinc body snugly houses the level and has a brass cap covering where it was (presumably glued) into place, and it provides decently accurate readings. The scribe has a brass threaded end to keep it from sliding out (a problem I've had with other low cost combination squares). Most importantly of all, the square is just that, SQUARE. I've had several issues with low cost combination squares being off by as much as 1/8th of an inch per foot, but this one is perfectly square. For the price of this combination square I would say it's one of the best on the market.
