Bosch DLR165K Laser Distance Measuring Device Review

Bosch DLR165K Laser Distance Measuring Device
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm in agreement with most in that this is a big time saver, especially when getting a tape measure between two surfaces is impractical e.g. crown molding. After several months of use I've found a few critical shortcomings.
I've received a couple of bogus measurements that were in the ballpark of the actual ones. While these could have been due to user error, I was careful to note the discrepancy and was able to reproduce it on one occasion. To be fair, the unit gets stored in my glove box, has been knocked around a bit and is not exactly in new condition. However, I would like it to either work or not work. Erroneous readings are not acceptable.
Another gripe about this device is that the beam does not shoot plumb up from the base of the laser. That is to say, if you just rest the case on a surface that is parallel to another, you'll be measuring a distance that is angled slightly away from plumb. This can be especially frustrating when you set the unit down on a bottom plate and just never seem to hit the top plate only 8' up without angling the unit a bit by hand.
Finally, as others have mentioned, the laser cannot be configured to read in inches and fractions only. e.g. 94-5/16 will read 7'10-5/16. Converting to inches in your head inevitably leads to cutting errors so the fix around this seems to be to switch to reading off your tape in feet & inches when you make your mark rather than the inches-only format that you are used to.
Still, the price is right. In my mind this makes it a great tool, especially for estimating. But, for that $100 board, you'd be wise to double-check that measurement with your tape.

Bosch GPL3T 3-Point Torpedo Laser Alignment Kit Review

Bosch GPL3T 3-Point Torpedo Laser Alignment Kit
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have tried many laser/leveler tools in the past, and some, like the FatMax self leveling multiline laser have not been a waste of money. OK, not the same money as the big professional lasers. But mostly a waste. So rather skeptically got this Bosch unit but only after being happy with the Bosch DAF220K electronic protractor for cove mouldings on cathedral ceilings. I had been installing a 100' aluminum and glass deck fence on a sl wavy seawall and also needing level footings on a bi-sloping deck and was frustrated with the wind and gravity messing the chalklines. My other lasers just couldn't be trusted over such a distance for flush and level and my 4 ft precision level was too long for final plumb of the 3 ft stiles.
So I bought this unit. Rarely has a tool made my life so much easier. Maybe just luck this one was so well calibrated that the bubble level on the adjustable stand got me within 3/32th inch of level at 100 ft! That little magnetically held stand is what makes this unit so useable for such a distance. Of course the dot is larger and fuzzier, but still bright enough during the day to get my mark. Thus was able to adjust the footing for the base of each stile and keep the distance to the bottom and top rails constant. Then turning the LED off, it was perfect as a torpedo level to give my plumb adjustments. Checking with my 4 ft level it was right on every time. (It also doesn't hurt that the design and workmanship are superb, the picture above doesn't do it justice, important when one loves precision tools, they just feel and look better.) Highly recommended.

Stanley 77-007 IntelliMeasure Ultrasonic Estimator with Laser Pointer Review

Stanley 77-007 IntelliMeasure Ultrasonic Estimator with Laser Pointer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The beauty of this tool is not in that you can throw away your tape measure (you can't) but in what this tool can do that a tape measure can't. Think of any measurement where one of the endpoints is somewhere you cannot or do not want to go. Think of measurements where there are physical obstructions that would make use of a tape measure difficult.
For example, if you want to know how deep a hole is or how high a ceiling is, this thing is handy. It is also useful for quickly determining the area of rooms if you're viewing a new home and are trying to decide if a floor plan meets your needs, or if you're trying to find out if the seller has significantly overstated the square footage.
Buyers should note that while this product is called a "Laser Estimator" it is really an ultrasonic range estimator with a laser pointer attached so that you can easily aim the device. The device uses the return time of reflected ultrasound to determine distance. Because it uses reflected high-frequency sound, you should avoid aiming at curved surfaces as this can really throw off the measurement.
The device is pretty well designed. It has a large button on the side of the unit that is easy to activate when holding the unit against a wall. The other buttons are placed on the front of the unit, where they are handy when you are looking at the LCD display. The unit has a flat, broad bottom so it is easy to hold it flush against a wall and it will stand on its own for measuring ceiling heights.
I rate the product four stars instead of five, because I too would like to see better accuracy than +/- 3 inches in 50 feet. It would be nice if a device like this were accurate enough to use for cutting lumber. But it's good enough for less ciritcal things like estimating the amount of wallpaper or carpeting to buy.

In the first 10 minutes out of the package, we gave this little fellow a workout, measuring everything within our sight. And when we double-checked with a good old-fashioned measuring tape, Stanley was right on the mark. Even up to its cap of 50 feet, it was accurate. For distances greater than that, an auto-add feature keeps a running total for you. You can change measuring units from English to metric with the press of a button, and it's all run by a little 9-volt battery. You don't even need the instructions because it's very intuitive. And let's face it, don't we all love anything that comes with a laser pointer? This one doesn't affect the actual measurement, but it shows you exactly where you're aiming the thing. This is a sweet little unit for a nice price, and it beats walking across a room hoping your tape measure won't let go. --Kris Jensen-Van HesteThe Stanley IntelliMeasure Ultrasonic Estimator quickly calculates square footage and room volumes, providing you with estimates accurate to plus or minus 5-percent within a 50-foot range. In just 2 to 6 seconds, a measurement can be attained in either imperial or metric graduations and is displayed on an easy-to-read LED screen. This ultrasonic measurer comes with a safe, easy-to-aim red laser pointer for accuracy; measurements can be taken from either the top or the bottom of the case and a convenient memory storage and recall option is included. This product is powered by a 9-volt battery and features a low-battery indicator and automatic shut-off. It is backed by a limited lifetime warranty.

Bosch DWM40LK Miter Finder Digital Protractor/Angle Kit with Extension Leg and Case Review

Bosch DWM40LK Miter Finder Digital Protractor/Angle Kit with Extension Leg and Case
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was glad that I read the other reviews, which convinced me to purchase the kit (includes extension and case), instead of merely the tool. At first glance, it seems that the legs of the tool are long enough to give you accurate readings on any wall. HOWEVER, calling the "extension piece" an extension is completely misleading. The extension is really a piece that slides over one of the legs allowing you to slide it past the "pivoting joint" of the tool, which means that you now have a SHORT side. This allows you to measure short wall transitions as well as stair angles, etc. Trust me, it is absolutely necessary, and yes it should be included in the basic model even if they wish to increase the price to compensate for its additional cost. One other thing, in a number of reviews the reviewers lament that they wish there was a locking device on the pivoting joint so that the angle could be maintained when transferring the angle from the wall to the miter saw. After reading the reviews, I also thought that this should have been an easy fix. However, I found that this locking device would have been completely unnecessary. At least for my tool, you would have to be a gorilla to inadvertantly move the legs while setting up the miter saw as it is extremely tight. Also, since you know the angle after taking the measurement, on the few occassions where this may happen, it is no big deal to simply move the legs a bit to get back to the recorded angle. Overall, I am extremely pleased with this tool and have used it as part of my equipment setups with fantastic results. As an engineer I am a bit pedantic when it comes to setting up equipment accurately because I know that settling for less than the best can cost you in the end product. I realize that this review is supposed to be only about the Bosch DWM40LK, but word of advice to those interested in setting up your equipment accurately. If you combine this tool with the Wixey Digital Angle tool or a like measuring device, you will think you died and went to heaven as your equipment will be so accurate, resulting in phenomenally accurate end products.

Bosch DWM40L Miter Finder 17-Inch Digital Protractor Review

Bosch DWM40L Miter Finder 17-Inch Digital Protractor
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Initially when I looked at this tool, I thought that it was a bit pricey for a digital protractor. Now I find myself using this tool for framing, trim work, and saw alignment. It has been invaluable in checking miter gauges for accuracy, you could use a protractor or speed square, but this is more accurate than a speed square and much quicker than either, especially if you need to make adjustments. This tool impressed me when I was checking alignment on my sliding compound miter saw. I wanted to verify its accuracy out of the box so I dialed into 90 / 0 degrees, the BOSCH protractor read 90.3, flipped it over and measured the other side of the blade and it read 89.7. Definitley much quicker than the conventional way, and you can easily use this with the table saw. Typically over time ( about 5 months now ) this tool reads between 0.0 and 0.1 accuracy, and like most scales you can check its accuracy and know what your margin of accuracy is. The back spring angle feature is very handy for crown molding, and for checking corners the back edge is rounded so as not to foil your reading in an inside corner measurement. This tool does so much more than I have mentioned, these are just tasks that I have used repeatedly and successfully. A carrying case would be nice, as this unit is nicely machined, it has a level built in which is handy and for quick checks, it saves holding two tools. So far, I am very satisfied with this tool.

Bosch GLR825 Laser Distance Measurer Review

Bosch GLR825 Laser Distance Measurer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Bosch 825 is a very handy device that will allow you to quickly and accurately measure some things, especially large things, much more quickly and accurately that you could with a tape measure, especially if you are alone. It also is capable of measuring some things that would have been difficult or impractical with a tape measure, and as a convenience it also can do a variety of calculations such as area and volume that are based on multiple measurements.
However, don't throw away your tape measure yet, because there are some things that it won't do (or at least I can't figure out how to do). Specifically, laser measuring units need a target at the far end and thus are really good for measuring inside dimensions but not outside dimensions. Thus measuring things like a table top or side wall of a building is difficult or impossible because there is no inherent target at the far end (so you have to add one), while with a tape measure you would just hook the edge of the item to be measured.
I have not owned or even used a laser distance measuring device before. I chose this specific unit because it had excellent long-distance capabilities (820') that I needed for measuring property lines, it is rugged and small, and it was attractively priced compared to the Leica units. I am not an expert on the topic of laser measurement, nor can I compare this unit to others. However, for those contemplating purchase of this unit, I can offer the following observations:
THE GOOD
* Nice size and construction. It's about the size of a large bar of soap and thus fits easily in your hand. Body is heavy-duty plastic that looks pretty rugged and dirt-proof, although I'm personally not going to test this.
* LCD display is always easy to read outdoors in sunlight, and has a backlight for dim indoor situations.
* Has a built-in level, and also a standard tripod mount the use of which is essential for some long-distance measurements.
* Very fast. Measurements are nearly instantaneous. Unit turns on very fast.
* You can measure from 4 different reference points on the device, including front, back, the tripod mount, and a little stick that you can fold out from the bottom so you can measure corner-to-corner.
* Comes with a decent nylon case and lanyard.
* Amazingly for a small electronic device, it is NOT made in China! Would you believe Switzerland?
THE LESS-GOOD
* Instruction manual is terrible. It's a cryptic little multi-lingual newsprint document. Being multi-lingual is not a problem, except that the device and all of its cryptic buttons are pictured only once at the beginning of the manual and then referred to in the later text only by number, e.g. "... push the measuring button 7 ..." making you refer to the earlier tiny diagram in which all of the numbered items are really hard to tell apart.
* The instruction manual is very rudimentary, and does not give any usage tips on how to do difficult measurements. For example, maybe there are some tricks that would allow you to do measurements of things that don't have a target at the far end, etc.
* The instruction manual is currently not on-line at the Bosch site, even though there is a link and page where it supposedly is or will be provided. (I like the ability to get a copy in case I lose or destroy the one that came with the unit. I need to carry the manual with me because some of the functions are not so obvious, at least until I become more proficient.)OTHER OBSERVATIONS
* As far as I can tell, this unit (GLR825) is identical to the somewhat cheaper GLR500 except that the GLR825 has an optical sight that enables you to see the laser dot at a longer distance. The GLR825 thus is advertised as being usable over a longer distance (800 ft vs only 500ft for the GLR500). Both units come with the same instruction manual.
* Obviously this device contains a powerful laser, and when the beam is on it can easily reflect back into your eyes. Once activated indoors, it is amazing how many reflective surfaces there are: windows, shiny metal, etc. Note that some of the special glasses sold to help with laser measurements do NOT protect against this. Certain measurements such as square footage and volume will leave the laser beam on between the multiple measurements required, so you really need to be careful!
* It has trouble measuring through glass, if that is an issue.Overall a very handy little device that makes a great addition to your toolkit, although you will still need your tape measure. PS. I bought mine on sale from another site for quite a bit less than the price I have seen here.

Sinometer Laser-type Tape Measure, JT60 Review

Sinometer Laser-type Tape Measure, JT60
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This measuring device works well. Since this is the first laser-measuring device I've personally used, I'm still getting used to the accuracy required to get a good reading. That is, you have to maintain level-ness and have a fairly good reflective material to aim at. It will take some readings on an angle. I have not used the extension (ultra-sonice)yet. Using within manufacturing environment- line of sight often difficult. Overall, this will assist in plant measurments where tape measures cannot reach, or measuring with just one person.

Bosch GTL3 Professional Tile Laser Review

Bosch GTL3 Professional Tile Laser
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I used it for the first time last week while doing a 400+ sq ft tile job here on Long Island in NY.
At first I thought thought the laser light wasn't strong enough but after playing with it for a few minutes right on the tiles I found it to be quite sufficient light wise.
I marked some layout lines with my chalk line and square to see how close the tool came to them and I have to say it was within a 1/8-+" of my lines. I'm guessing that it was my lines that may have been off but even splitting that I'd have to say it's real accurate.
The room I was doing was about 13'x31'.
Another nice thing is the laser line jumps right over my spacers which I used sticking up from the tiles rather than set into the tiles..and the line falls back onto the edges of each tile.
I HIGHLY recommend the Bosch GTL3. If I had to do it all over again I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

Bosch 83038 Deluxe Door and Jamb Hinge Template Kit Review

Bosch 83038 Deluxe Door and Jamb Hinge Template Kit
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Bosch hinge template kit is the best of all the numerous metal adjustable templates available. Bosch bought the tool from Stanley tools decades ago, and Stanley bought it from someone else years before that. It is an old design that is yet to be improved upon by anyone else. Although the initial price seems high compared to lesser capable templates like the Porter cable, you will make that money back very quickly in time saved and problems avoided.
I use this tool for retrofit and for new construction and no longer carry fixed templates anymore. For new construction, you simply spend a few minutes assembling and configuring the template and then it is good to go for days of door hanging. It takes just moments to switch the hinge size for different door thicknesses, a time saver compared to fetching another full size template that could be lost in a different part of the jobsite. Retrofitting new doors in old jambs is cake as you can easily match the template to the old hinge layout for perfect mortises that fit the first time.
The rails have holes that engage ball bearings on the template frames. This prevents the hinge layout from changing if you should drop the tool on end. If you have ever used the PC template and bumped it while transferring from the door to the jamb, you know what a problem it is too have the template spacing change on you.
On room additions, it is easy to match the hinge layout for the new doors and jambs to match the old doors due to the adjustability of the Bosch template (this is important in situations where the new doors are close to old doors and the homeowner would notice the hinges not lining up). The kit comes with 2 top guides of different lengths that accomodate any top hinge spacing you will find in the field. The rails allow infinite adjustment so you can quickly match any hinge layout.
One thing the PC has over the bosch is that edge stops retract. This is only an issue when remortising the hinge gaines on an old jamb that has casing and caulking too close to the jamb edge. On the Bosch, the fixed edge stops can sometimes hit the caulking or casing and prevent the template sections from laying completely flat. On the PC, the stops can retract to counteract this problem, but overall the Bosch is significantly more accurate in retrofit situations.
When you first get your new Bosch template kit, you need to fine tune the hinge length stops. From the factory, they are not correct. Two screws loosen and allow an adjustable plate to be moved into the correct position. A quick run on a 2x4 lets you check for perfection before you ever touch an expensive door.
As mentioned by others, the small metal case is much more user friendly than the extra long PC box, but it doesn't hold the 4 hinge conversion kit or the 3 hinge extended rail kit. What most guys do is buy an additional standard kit, and make custom wooden rails for 8 to 10 foot doors. This way you have 6 template sections instead of four, and you can theoretically have 2 guys hanging 6-8 doors for more production.

The nails are very strong, I have spares but haven't had a problem with breakage at all. In fact, you can order from Bosch any part you need and can get stuff shipped next day if the parts are in stock.
The jamb gauges only fit Timely or hollow metal frames, so you need to file them down to fit wood jambs for retrofit jobs. But there are other ways to match existing hinge layouts so I don't recommend the jamb gauges unless you like to order book doors for commercial jobs or do nothing but retrofit.
Like any metal template, when you hit it with the router bit, it gets nicked and the bit can get damaged. But the template sections completely disassemble so any damaged part can be replaced. More than once I forgot to put the template guide in the router and got some healthy gouges in the template. A call to Bosch and all was fixed. Usually, though, you will nick the sides or length adjustment plate and these are quickly fixed in the field. The sides can be "reversed" and the length stops can be filed flat and readjusted. The hinge size adjustment bar can be rotated to move the nick out of the way. Very reliable even when damaged!
This is a terrific professional tool for the professional door hanger. And it works with any router that has a 1/2" mortising bit and 5/8" template guide. It even works for 5/8" radius hinges with a 1 1/4" mortising bit and 1 3/8" template guide. A homeowner would not need this tool, and it is not efficient for hanging just 1 door.

The Deluxe Door and Jamb Hinge Template kit works with wood or metal stops. Use it for installing new door panels or for adding a new door to an old cased opening or jamb. There is no need for measuring tools or a straight edge or for tedious calculations. All adjustments are easily accessible and the well-balanced template transfers directly from the jamb to the door (or vice-versa) with hinges on either side of the door. There's no need to turn the template end over end. Works with or without stops installed. --C. Dwight Barnett
