Bosch DLR165K Laser Distance Measuring Device Review

Bosch DLR165K Laser Distance Measuring Device
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm in agreement with most in that this is a big time saver, especially when getting a tape measure between two surfaces is impractical e.g. crown molding. After several months of use I've found a few critical shortcomings.
I've received a couple of bogus measurements that were in the ballpark of the actual ones. While these could have been due to user error, I was careful to note the discrepancy and was able to reproduce it on one occasion. To be fair, the unit gets stored in my glove box, has been knocked around a bit and is not exactly in new condition. However, I would like it to either work or not work. Erroneous readings are not acceptable.
Another gripe about this device is that the beam does not shoot plumb up from the base of the laser. That is to say, if you just rest the case on a surface that is parallel to another, you'll be measuring a distance that is angled slightly away from plumb. This can be especially frustrating when you set the unit down on a bottom plate and just never seem to hit the top plate only 8' up without angling the unit a bit by hand.
Finally, as others have mentioned, the laser cannot be configured to read in inches and fractions only. e.g. 94-5/16 will read 7'10-5/16. Converting to inches in your head inevitably leads to cutting errors so the fix around this seems to be to switch to reading off your tape in feet & inches when you make your mark rather than the inches-only format that you are used to.
Still, the price is right. In my mind this makes it a great tool, especially for estimating. But, for that $100 board, you'd be wise to double-check that measurement with your tape.

If you are looking for fast, easy, and accurate measuring, look no further than the Bosch DLR165K Digital Laser Range Finder Kit. With precision laser measuring technology, a large measuring range, indirect length measurement, and more, you can count on this tool to handle just about any task. And with a compact, portable design, this handy range finder fits in your pocket, so you'll always have it when you need it.
Precision Laser TechnologyUtilizing precision laser technology, the DLR165K takes length, area, and volume measurements that are accurate up to 1/16 inch. Whether you're trimming and scribing cabinets and counters or preparing to cut lumber, pipes, or conduit, you'll appreciate the DLR165K's fast measurement time of 0.5 to 4.0 seconds. You'll also love the easy-to-read digital display that shows all results in three units of measure: feet and inches, decimal feet, and metric.
4 Measuring Reference Points for Ease of UseFor further convenience, a single laser beam does both the pointing and the measuring. What's more, the DLR165K has four measuring reference points--back, front, swing-out extension pin for measuring from inside corners and channels, and center of tripod (sold separately). This means you can take several measurements simultaneously, without repositioning the unit. Also, a large range from two inches to 165 feet gives you the versatility you need to complete a variety of jobs.
3 Measurement Modes Offer FlexibilityEasier to use and more accurate than a tape measure, the DLR165K makes measuring a one-person job, even when walking off distances. In fact, its continuous-length mode automatically adjusts your measurement as you move forward, which means you won't waste time taking notes and repositioning the tool.
There's also an indirect measuring mode that calculates the distances that cannot be measured due to obstructions or lack of reflecting surfaces. Additionally, a continuous laser mode saves you time by reducing key strokes during rapid measurements.
World's Smallest Digital Range FinderMeasuring 4 x 2-15/16 x 1-1/4 inches, the DLR165K is the world's smallest digital range finder. You can easily fit it into your pocket, place it over your hand with the included hand strap, or hook its included carrying case on your belt loop. Strait-Line 64030 Laser Tape Review

Strait-Line 64030 Laser Tape
Average Reviews:

I understand that this tool is only for estimating, but even for that purpose it's unacceptable. Lots, maybe most of the time I simply get an "error" result; other times, on a distance I can visualize to be 10 or 12 feet, this device says "3 foot" or "3 foot 2 inch" (this seems to be a favorite false result, happens A LOT). Device won't work if you're close to a corner, won't work well on any irregular surface, and rounds to the nearest inch; no eighths, no quarters, nothing less than a full inch. All in all, I have no confidence in the results, and have switched back to a tape.

Strait-Line 6045707 Laser Leveler and Sonic Laser Measuring Tape Combo Pack Review

Strait-Line 6045707 Laser Leveler and Sonic Laser Measuring Tape Combo Pack
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I ordered this primarily for the cheap distance measuring part.
I've used it for general purpose measuring for customer HT install quotes.
Has proven more than accurate enough for finished wall situations and while much greater accuracy is available, the cost/benefit analysis for my situation made this the best choice.
The laser pointer helps ensure accuracy on target.
What kept this from getting 4+ stars is the fact that they do not make it clear that the nature of this device makes measuring offset walls impossible.
E.G.
If you have a room that opens up or has a recess, even though you can target the wall which is further away, the sound wave spreads so rapidly that it will error or give a reading off or the closer wall.
Once you are aware of this you simply measure to the closer wall, then remeasure from that wall to the end of the alcove or recess.
Overall not a big deal considering the price.

This laser level and laser tape combination is a fantastic pairing whether you are a professional or a home project enthusiast. These are incredibly helpful if you are hanging cabinets or shelving, hanging wallpaper, installing carpeting, painting, installing suspended ceiling or flooring or just hanging pictures in your home. The laser level is compact, inexpensive and reliable. Strait-Line's 60 foot laser line can mark a 120-foot work area simply by swiveling the laser, and it's accurate to + or - 3/16" at a 20 foot distance. This laser level is non-marking so you don't have to worry about it marring your surfaces. It comes complete with 4 strips of 3M Command Adhesive so you can easily affix it to any vertical or horizontal surface. The laser line also bends so you can accurately level even around corners! The laser level measures 3-5/8" base diameter and 3-1/4" high. The laser tape uses sonic wave technology to measure distances up to 50 feet with the touch of a button. The laser targeting clearly and accurately indicates the point of measurement. The Sonic Laser Tape calculates both the area and volume of a room. The memory positions stores up to 5 important measurements. The Sonic Laser Tape is light weight and compact for easy storage.

Stanley 77-007 IntelliMeasure Ultrasonic Estimator with Laser Pointer Review

Stanley 77-007 IntelliMeasure Ultrasonic Estimator with Laser Pointer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The beauty of this tool is not in that you can throw away your tape measure (you can't) but in what this tool can do that a tape measure can't. Think of any measurement where one of the endpoints is somewhere you cannot or do not want to go. Think of measurements where there are physical obstructions that would make use of a tape measure difficult.
For example, if you want to know how deep a hole is or how high a ceiling is, this thing is handy. It is also useful for quickly determining the area of rooms if you're viewing a new home and are trying to decide if a floor plan meets your needs, or if you're trying to find out if the seller has significantly overstated the square footage.
Buyers should note that while this product is called a "Laser Estimator" it is really an ultrasonic range estimator with a laser pointer attached so that you can easily aim the device. The device uses the return time of reflected ultrasound to determine distance. Because it uses reflected high-frequency sound, you should avoid aiming at curved surfaces as this can really throw off the measurement.
The device is pretty well designed. It has a large button on the side of the unit that is easy to activate when holding the unit against a wall. The other buttons are placed on the front of the unit, where they are handy when you are looking at the LCD display. The unit has a flat, broad bottom so it is easy to hold it flush against a wall and it will stand on its own for measuring ceiling heights.
I rate the product four stars instead of five, because I too would like to see better accuracy than +/- 3 inches in 50 feet. It would be nice if a device like this were accurate enough to use for cutting lumber. But it's good enough for less ciritcal things like estimating the amount of wallpaper or carpeting to buy.

In the first 10 minutes out of the package, we gave this little fellow a workout, measuring everything within our sight. And when we double-checked with a good old-fashioned measuring tape, Stanley was right on the mark. Even up to its cap of 50 feet, it was accurate. For distances greater than that, an auto-add feature keeps a running total for you. You can change measuring units from English to metric with the press of a button, and it's all run by a little 9-volt battery. You don't even need the instructions because it's very intuitive. And let's face it, don't we all love anything that comes with a laser pointer? This one doesn't affect the actual measurement, but it shows you exactly where you're aiming the thing. This is a sweet little unit for a nice price, and it beats walking across a room hoping your tape measure won't let go. --Kris Jensen-Van HesteThe Stanley IntelliMeasure Ultrasonic Estimator quickly calculates square footage and room volumes, providing you with estimates accurate to plus or minus 5-percent within a 50-foot range. In just 2 to 6 seconds, a measurement can be attained in either imperial or metric graduations and is displayed on an easy-to-read LED screen. This ultrasonic measurer comes with a safe, easy-to-aim red laser pointer for accuracy; measurements can be taken from either the top or the bottom of the case and a convenient memory storage and recall option is included. This product is powered by a 9-volt battery and features a low-battery indicator and automatic shut-off. It is backed by a limited lifetime warranty.

CST/Berger TLM100 Laser Distance Measurer Review

CST/Berger TLM100 Laser Distance Measurer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I saw press releases about this product and was one of the first people to purchase it, through homedepot.com for more money than amazon is currently asking.
It is well built, intuitive and easy to use.
Note that this Tru Laser, is truly a laser measuring device. That means the little laser beam takes the measurement - whatever it is shining on is what you measure.
Don't confuse this with the ubiquitous "sonic measurers" that use a laser pointer. Those use sound waves which are inaccurate and wide, making it frustrating/impossible to measure anything small or fine.
The product designers did an outstanding job. I found that after reading the short instruction sheet (1 big page) I was able to remember which button to press for each function.
This device greatly enhances productivity and accuracy compared to using a tape measure or yardstick. You probably would not us it for shorter measurements, say less than 18 inches but for anything over that it's the weapon of choice.
The TruLaser is excellent for quickly and accurately measuring home dimensions. For basic things like room dimensions (wall to wall distance, ceiling height, ...) it's excellent. Trying to accurately measure the height of a vaulted ceiling with a tape measure requires a ladder, and sometimes two people. With this device one person can do the job in about 10 seconds.
I was pleasantly surprised to find I could measure more things than I had hoped for. As long as you can catch an edge, the laser is usually able to take a reading (it tells you if it cannot). So you can measure the inside dimensions of a window (if it's larger than 18 inches or so), and you can measure how far the window is from the doorway or an adjacent window (assuming you can catch a piece of trim with the laser).
The product promises 1/4 inch accuracy at up to 100 feet range.
I haven't done exhaustive tests, but it in most cases I tried (30 feet or less) the accuracy was better than promised.
After using the Tru Laser for a few days I simply would not be without it - a tape measure seems so cumbersome and inefficient
in comparison.
I highly recommend this item.

Bosch GLR825 Laser Distance Measurer Review

Bosch GLR825 Laser Distance Measurer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Bosch 825 is a very handy device that will allow you to quickly and accurately measure some things, especially large things, much more quickly and accurately that you could with a tape measure, especially if you are alone. It also is capable of measuring some things that would have been difficult or impractical with a tape measure, and as a convenience it also can do a variety of calculations such as area and volume that are based on multiple measurements.
However, don't throw away your tape measure yet, because there are some things that it won't do (or at least I can't figure out how to do). Specifically, laser measuring units need a target at the far end and thus are really good for measuring inside dimensions but not outside dimensions. Thus measuring things like a table top or side wall of a building is difficult or impossible because there is no inherent target at the far end (so you have to add one), while with a tape measure you would just hook the edge of the item to be measured.
I have not owned or even used a laser distance measuring device before. I chose this specific unit because it had excellent long-distance capabilities (820') that I needed for measuring property lines, it is rugged and small, and it was attractively priced compared to the Leica units. I am not an expert on the topic of laser measurement, nor can I compare this unit to others. However, for those contemplating purchase of this unit, I can offer the following observations:
THE GOOD
* Nice size and construction. It's about the size of a large bar of soap and thus fits easily in your hand. Body is heavy-duty plastic that looks pretty rugged and dirt-proof, although I'm personally not going to test this.
* LCD display is always easy to read outdoors in sunlight, and has a backlight for dim indoor situations.
* Has a built-in level, and also a standard tripod mount the use of which is essential for some long-distance measurements.
* Very fast. Measurements are nearly instantaneous. Unit turns on very fast.
* You can measure from 4 different reference points on the device, including front, back, the tripod mount, and a little stick that you can fold out from the bottom so you can measure corner-to-corner.
* Comes with a decent nylon case and lanyard.
* Amazingly for a small electronic device, it is NOT made in China! Would you believe Switzerland?
THE LESS-GOOD
* Instruction manual is terrible. It's a cryptic little multi-lingual newsprint document. Being multi-lingual is not a problem, except that the device and all of its cryptic buttons are pictured only once at the beginning of the manual and then referred to in the later text only by number, e.g. "... push the measuring button 7 ..." making you refer to the earlier tiny diagram in which all of the numbered items are really hard to tell apart.
* The instruction manual is very rudimentary, and does not give any usage tips on how to do difficult measurements. For example, maybe there are some tricks that would allow you to do measurements of things that don't have a target at the far end, etc.
* The instruction manual is currently not on-line at the Bosch site, even though there is a link and page where it supposedly is or will be provided. (I like the ability to get a copy in case I lose or destroy the one that came with the unit. I need to carry the manual with me because some of the functions are not so obvious, at least until I become more proficient.)OTHER OBSERVATIONS
* As far as I can tell, this unit (GLR825) is identical to the somewhat cheaper GLR500 except that the GLR825 has an optical sight that enables you to see the laser dot at a longer distance. The GLR825 thus is advertised as being usable over a longer distance (800 ft vs only 500ft for the GLR500). Both units come with the same instruction manual.
* Obviously this device contains a powerful laser, and when the beam is on it can easily reflect back into your eyes. Once activated indoors, it is amazing how many reflective surfaces there are: windows, shiny metal, etc. Note that some of the special glasses sold to help with laser measurements do NOT protect against this. Certain measurements such as square footage and volume will leave the laser beam on between the multiple measurements required, so you really need to be careful!
* It has trouble measuring through glass, if that is an issue.Overall a very handy little device that makes a great addition to your toolkit, although you will still need your tape measure. PS. I bought mine on sale from another site for quite a bit less than the price I have seen here.

This tool is useful to the point of fun. However for measuring longer distances it is VERY difficult to find the red "dot", especially outdoors, but this is likely a problem with all devices of this type. This measuring device works well. Since this is the first laser-measuring device I've personally used, I'm still getting used to the accuracy required to get a good reading. That is, you have to maintain level-ness and have a fairly good reflective material to aim at. It will take some readings on an angle. I have not used the extension (ultra-sonice)yet. Using within manufacturing environment- line of sight often difficult. Overall, this will assist in plant measurments where tape measures cannot reach, or measuring with just one person.

A revolutionary measuring gadget! Here's a device that can calculate length, width, area and even volume at the touch of a button. This intelligent Electronic Distance Measuring Tools send out narrow beams of sound waves that can "bounce" off solid objects back to the hand-held receiver. Custom electronics and a microprocessor then convert elapsed time into a distance measurement and display it on the LCD. When used with its electronic target, the Dual unit mode uses both sound waves and an infrared beam. This Electronic Distance Measuring Tool has a built-in calculator to add linear measurements and compute areas and volumes. This is a two- range measurement kit. You can use single unit for measure a distance less than 60 feet (18 meters) , a good choice for indoor measurement; with the target unit, you can measure up to 250 feet (75meters) with an accuracy of 99.5%?1 cm. You can get results in meters or in feet. It's fool proof and simple to use: just point at a target, press a button , instant measurement, whether it's length, area or volume. Specifications: Single unit mode: Minimum 1 foot 6 inches (0.46 m); Maximum: 60 Feet(18Meters); Dual unit mode: Minimum: 3 feet 3 inches(1 meter); Maximum: 250 Feet (75 Meter). 7 memories for easy calculations of the area and volume; Accuracy 99.5%?1 cm. Since the dial, with the level bubble, can rotate 360 deg, you can measure slopes from the bottom or from the top. You can even set the slope to what you want to get and then raise one end of a board (roof rafter) up until the bubble level says you are at the level. This company lacks integrity and does not provide the products that you purchase. I had purchased two laser tape measures from this company and they have yet to make any attempt to ship me the merchandise. When contacting the company they state that they will check into what happened but never get back with the customer. I would not recommend anyone to purchase items from this company.

This Laser Level Tape Measure Pro is perfect for the handyman around the house! The Laser Level Tape Measure Pro is actually a 2 in 1 tool as it is a laser level and a tape measure. The laser level can make both horizontal and vertical laser lines. The bottom features a tripod attachment for the most accurate results. It can actually go 360 degrees around, so you can level a whole room in one shot. The laser level can even be placed in the corner of a room to level shelves or speaker stands. Laser level can change size also - On the bottom you will find adjustable magnetic legs. That's only the half of it!! The tape measure part of the laser level extends to 25 feet with a 1 inch wide stainless steel blade. The laser level tape measure also features a belt clip so you can add it to a tool belt. Batteries are INCLUDED and you get a bonus extra set!! So the next time you walk past that crooked picture in the dining room, think of the laser level tape measure pro and get those nails straight this time around!

Just received this really disappointing product. It never gives the same reading. A nightmare if you were measuring for carpet, etc. I never return products but this one is going back to Amazon.

Anyone who uses an ordinary tape measure will want a Sonin Multi-Measure 45 when they see how easy it is to use. This innovative measuring tool sends out narrow beams of sound waves that "bounce" off solid objects back to the hand-held receiver. Custom electronics and a microprocessor then convert elapsed time into a distance measurement and display it on the LCD. A built-in calculator adds linear measurements and compute areas and volumes. Intelligent software, improved accuracy and easy-to-understand instructions complete the measuring tool. Recommended for indoor use only.
